Jane Smith lives in the Nelson area and has painted full-time for the last 20 years.
She can be found in her working studio in the Tasman Village, 9am-5pm.
Jane works in watercolours and is always striving to perfect the challenges of the medium.
She uses mostly transparent colour, of pure colour pigments to obtain the effects of light
which is an inherent potential of watercolour.
Most of her paintings are of people, mainly “back on”, of ample proportions. “Comfortable
people” she calls them. The people in her pictures seem to be in mid conversation +
invite speculation by the viewer of what they might be saying. Subjects pictured are of
local activites like apple picking, at the beach or just talking.
Jane is also influenced by her local landscapes (latterly of the Nelson district, previously
South Canterbury). Her “long views + vista” of the Waimea Estuary, Kina Peninsula and
the Nelson mountains + beaches are sought after as mementos, particularly for
overseas travellers.
She has been involved in many group and solo exhibitions throughout New Zealand.
Jane welcomes visitors to her studio which is open most days.
